National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year September 15 - October 15. Americans celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
Why September 15? September 15 is the anniversary of independence for Latin American counties Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. It originally began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson, but was extended to 30 days under President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
