Louisiana Native Spotlight

Sha'Condria "iCon" Sibley is a spoken word poet from Alexandria, Louisiana. She is currently based in New Orleans, Louisiana where she founded Team SNO (Slam New Orleans). iCon has won team and individual national and regional poetry slam titles, featured in plays, TV, and performed at Essence Music Festival. She is known for her poem "To All the Little Black Girls with Big Names." Hear her perform the poem below!

Poem Types

Blank Verse: poetry written without precise meter that does not rhyme

Rhymed poetry: poems rhyme by definition, although their scheme varies

Free verse: poetry that lacks a consistent rhyme scheme, metrical pattern, or musical form

Epics: lengthy, narrative work of poetry

Narrative poetry: similar to an epic, a narrative poem tells a story

Spoken word poetry: oral poetic performance art that is based mainly on the poetic as well as the performer's aesthetic qualities
